A Limited Warranty may have been issued by the Product Finishes Division of The Sherwin-Williams Company for the Coating System applied by Factory Applicator to a Suitable Substrate that was subsequently installed at a Project. Before submitting a claim, review the descriptions below for what is covered under this warranty. Solutions for some common paint problems - failure of coating to properly adhere to surface can result in one of the following: Warrantable claims include chipping, cracking or peeling not efflorescence.
Chipping
CHIPPING is where cured paint chips down on either the substrate or previous coat. There are numerous causes for chipping. Most common causes for chipping include moisture penetration along with other environmental conditions. Prior to repair, ensure the root cause has been identified. The root cause must be addressed as part of the correction.
SOLUTION: To correct chipping, remove loose paint chips with a scraper or wire brush, sanding to feather the edges, priming any bare spots and repainting. Prime with a recommended Sherwin-Williams primer. Repaint with Sherwin-Williams Resilience® exterior latex paint.
Flaking
Flaking is the splitting of a dry paint film through at least one coat. Early on, the problem appears as hairline cracks; later, flaking of paint chips occurs. Prior to repair, ensure the root cause has been identified. Cracking is often caused by numerous issues including surface contamination. The root cause must be addressed as part of the correction.
SOLUTION: It may be possible to correct cracking that does not go down to the substrate by removing the loose or flaking paint with a scraper or wire brush, sanding to feather the edges, priming any bare spots and repainting. If the cracking goes down to the substrate remove all of the paint by scraping and sanding. Prime with a recommended Sherwin-Williams primer. Repaint with Sherwin-Williams Resilience® exterior latex paint.
Peeling / Loss of Adhesion
PEELING and/or LOST OF ADHESION (Inter-Coat) between previous coating or primer. Prior to repair, ensure the root cause has been identified. This peeling is often caused by contamination or moisture penetration.

The following is NOT covered under warranty
*EfflorescenceEfflorescence is a substrate occurrence as it is a crystaline deposit on surfaces of cementatious substrates. |
|
EFFLORESCENCE can occur as a saturated, salts from the substrate dissolve and are carried to the surface as the excess moisture is drawn out. As the moisture then evaporates, the salts are left behind as a residue on the surface, this is known as “efflorescence”. |
|
SOLUTION: If excess moisture is the cause, eliminate the source by repairing the roof, cleaning out gutters and downspouts, and sealing any cracks in the masonry with a quality caulk or sealant. A method for removing efflorescence is by using Duckback products’ “Mason’s Select® Concrete Etcher.” First mist the surface with water and then apply Concrete Etcher full strength to surface using a pump-up sprayer or spray bottle liberally to affected areas for 10 minutes. Rinse surface with water and allow to dry to determine if efflorescence has been completely removed. Process may be repeated. In extreme cases, painting may be required. The recommended system will be to prime with Loxon® Concrete & Masonry Primer/Sealer and topcoat with Sherwin-Williams Resilience® |
